We’re celebrating our 10th birthday!! SMRU Consulting has hit double-digits!

We are celebrating ten years since the inauguration of SMRU Ltd, the consultancy/commercial arm of the Sea Mammal Research Unit!

Time has flown by since we were set up in 2006 by  Ian Boyd to support Marine Current Turbines with the world’s first commercial scale tidal turbine. Since then we have worked on projects globally, spanning six continents and all sectors of the marine industry from renewables to civil engineering, defence and oil and gas work. Its amazing how things have changed since 2006 in terms of the global science base of knowledge on the potential effects of anthropogenic impacts on marine mammals. With strategic research development and close partnerships with developers and regulators we are now well established as experts to assess, monitor and mitigate the impacts on marine mammals.

From our office in St Andrews we have now expanded over the globe with sister offices in both North America (Seattle and Vancouver) and Asia Pacific (Hong Kong). We continue to work very closely with our colleagues at the Sea Mammal Research Unit and the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling at the University of St Andrews.

We’re celebrating tonight in St Andrews, surrounded by the team, collaborators and friends. It is sure to be quite a party! We’re also awarding the SMRU Consulting 10th Anniversary prize – a research grant to help fund new scientific efforts – come back on Monday to find out who won! 🙂
