Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have developed a new wave foil that works like a whale’s tail! The idea being that it can harness wave energy to reduce fuel consumption for propulsion.
In testing at the Marintek’s towing tank the Whale Tail device has shown to reduce resistance by 9-17% at wave heights of 3m and under. The device works by using two wings or fins that move up and down when waves hit the vessel, propelling it forward through the waves. Project leader Eirik Bøckmann, anticipates that with hull optimisation for the foils performance could be further improved.
