CAB Case Studies

Salmon Bank, Washington State

A CAB platform was stationed at Salmon Bank from June to October, 2018. During this time, the system boasted 99% uptime over a 3 month dataset and received detection of harbor porpoise and killer whale.

Below are examples of calls and click received by the hydrophone during this time, plus visuals of how these vocalizations are displayed in PAMGuard.

Whistle Detection

A killer whale call as shown in PAMGuard viewer mode. PAMGuard draws colored contours along ‘whistles’ that are characteristic of calls. Visible are the harmonics of the call as shown by the multiple repetitive tones, the frequencies of which are integers of the fundamental tone.

Click Detection

A killer whale echolocation click as shown in PAMGuard viewer mode. The top plot shows a series of clicks in the amplitude-time domain while the bottom plots show the waveform and spectrum. A killer whale click has a center frequency of ~20 kHz.

Orca Click Audio

A porpoise echolocation click as shown in PAMGuard viewer mode. The top plot shows a series of clicks in the amplitude-time domain while the bottom plots show the waveform and spectrum. The center frequency of porpoise clicks is ~150 kHz.

The center frequency of this click is above the human hearing threshold.
