CAB Specifications

Small and Lightweight

With a height of 43 in (110 cm) and diameter of 22 in (56 cm), and weighing 100 lb (~45 kg), CAB can be deployed by only two people off a small vessel.


State of the Art Hydrophone

Individually calibrated Reson 4014 or Reson 4032 hydrophones, consistent with the international standards set by the National Physical Laboratory in the UK. Up to 3 hydrophones are possible per CAB platform.


Sample Rate

With a sample rate of up to 500 kHz, CAB is able to detect any vocalizing marine mammal from low frequency baleen whale calls to high frequency porpoise clicks (~150 kHz). Sample rate can be lowered to 250, 100, or 50 kHz to increase data storage depending on species monitored.


Mobile Communications System

Communication can be over radio or cellular 3G. In Mitigate mode, radios are used at either 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz depending on interference in the area and the range is up to 6 km. In Baseline mode, cellular 3G is used and the range is dependent on the carrier and connectivity of the specified area.


Longevity

2-3 weeks depending on configuration. In Baseline mode the platform will last ~3 weeks and in Mitigate mode it will last ~2 weeks. More information on both modes can be found on our CAB applications page. Powered from lithium-ion batteries with output voltage of 12V ~ 16.8V.


Software

CAB integrates industry-standard open source PAMGuard software with a Decimus computer developed by the University of St. Andrews. PAMGuard modules include click and whistle detectors, filtered noise measurements, third octave bands, sound recorders, and GPS.

Mooring System

The platform is moored with a 75 lb (35 kg) pyramid anchor connected to 3/8 Tenex line. Depths of up to 150 ft (45 m) are possible.


Memory Storage

A 1 TB hard drive dedicated for recordings and a 32 GB microSD card for PAMGuard files and system logs.
