Photos for fingerprints

Photo identification is a commonly used technique in studying marine mammals, for population estimation and deriving population demographic rates (e.g. survival rates, fertility rates). All of these are valuable inputs to PCOD models. Many whale and dolphin species can be identified for long lasting features by taking photos.

Eric Hoyt wrote a really nice piece with our friends at the Hakai Institute which provides a nice overview of how photo-ID is used to study humpback whales and other species.
