Meadhbh is a Project Scientist for SMRU Consulting, based in the Vancouver office. Meadhbh has experience working with industry and government clients and a variety of stakeholders to provide environmental services to the offshore renewable energy in Ireland and the UK and is involved in the pre-consent offshore wind farm impact team at SMRU Consulting Europe. Meadhbh has a strong seagoing background with seven years’ experience planning and conducting visual surveys for research and consultancy purposes.

During her masters at the University of Ulster, she used Digital Aerial Survey (DAS) data obtained from offshore renewable energy developments to carry out method testing using photogrammetry and collect morphometric measurements of marine mammals.

    Skills and Expertise

    GIS (ArcGIS & QGIS), Environmental Impact Assessment, visual marine mammal surveys, photo-ID and long-term monitoring of cetacean populations, marine mammal mitigation, bottlenose dolphin behavioral research, reviewing DAS data.

    • Seven years’ experience within the offshore and coastal development industry, working with industry and government clients, and a variety of stakeholders including the fishing industry, environmental NGOs and academia.

    • Practical field experience including over 600 commercial days at sea in Irish and European waters since 2016.

    • Drafting and input to scoping and baseline reports for marine mammal EIA.

    • Design and execution of boat-based surveys utilizing single and double platform line-transect methodologies, in addition to collection of photo-dentification and environmental data.

    • Analysis and validation of Photo-ID data and maintenance of a long-term Photo-ID catalogue.

    • Experience with photogrammetry and utilizing Digital Aerial Survey (DAS) data for identification and morphometric purposes.

  • Key Projects:

    • Burrard Inlet Passive Acoustic Monitoring - Port of Vancouver’s ECHO Program

      Carrying out fieldwork to deploy and redeploy hydrophones as part of a long-term acoustic monitoring program.

      Monitoring and reporting on underwater noise levels.

      Reviewing killer whale and harbour porpoise detections.

    • Processing and reviewing acoustic data for the presence of Southern Resident Killer Whales as part of the Quiet Sound program.

    • Processing C-POD data from the Scottish ECOMMAS, NNG and Seagreen sites

    • Marine mammal observer support for ECHO Program and Pacheedaht First Nation. Preparation of species distribution maps using GIS.
