BOEM Workbench Species Definitions - NSC 997
Advancing Species Definitions for BOEM’s
Impact Assessment Workbench
Through three previous projects for the UK Navy, SMRU Consulting has compiled a database of species definitions for 45 marine mammal species. The current database of definitions was last updated in 2021. Fields in the database include (but are not limited to): Species ID, scientific name, genus, common name, ITIS reference, conservation status, habitat characteristics, body length, dive depth, dive duration, surface time, group size, swim speed (with min/max and a quality indicator for the majority of these). We also have some experience from other projects compiling inputs for 3MB for marine mammal species on the east coast of the US.
We propose an effort to:
Work through the species included in the database and deliver to BOEM a copy of the 2021 database for all species and fields of interest (Species ID, scientific name, genus, common name, ITIS reference, dive depth, dive duration, surface time and swim speed as well as ascent and descent rates where available for a limited number of species)
Work through other resources we have for 3MB inputs and provide any additional fields available for those 46 species from those sources
Conduct literature reviews for up to an additional seven species in the Pacific for all parameters of interest to BOEM (all 3MB parameters available in the literature reviewed). Time will be allocated in priority order for the seven species. The tentative priority order is given below but this will be discussed and updated with the client as the project progresses:
o Gray whale
o California sea lion
o Pacific white sided dolphin
o Northern elephant seal
o Leatherback turtle
o Long beaked common dolphin
o Blue whale (Pacific)
The budget for the proposed work covers time for three members of the SMRU Consulting team to execute tasks 1-2 above:
Staff Grade hours total
Sam Simmons Principal Scientist 10 $1,999
Magda Chudzinska Senior Scientist 3 $539
Ellie Gregory Project Scientist 54 $7,451
$9,989
Project timeline: April 2026 to the end of June 2026.
